An instructor-led, 6- or 12-week, online course consisting of dynamic video lectures, interactive activities, and discussion forums with peers. The 12-week course lends itself to a rigorous and in-depth exploration of topics that couldn’t be covered over a 90-minute webinar or even 2-day seminar. With a flexible format that you can fit around your schedule, you can take advantage of frequent peer-instructor interaction, dynamic video lectures, and interactive course content to achieve your continuing education goals.
ASCE offers Guided Online Courses in a variety of practical, leading-edge engineering topics as a cost effective and engaging way to CEUs or PDHs. In addition, some of the 6-week Guided Online Courses can be applied to the Construction Engineering Certificate Program.
All instructors maintain an active presence in the weekly discussion forums, providing discussion prompts, responding to participant posts with thoughtful feedback, and offering guidance. Additionally, each course is proposed, designed and developed by the instructor.
Industry-leading subject-matter experts, recruited and vetted by ASCE Continuing Education, as well as ASCE’s Technical Institutes and Committees.
Each of the 6-week Guided Online Courses includes approximately 2.5 hours of lectures and exercises in the first four weeks. These courses also include practical exercises, interactive periods with the instructor and a live review of material before the final exam.
Each of the 12-week modules includes approximately 90 minutes of video and 30 minutes of interactive content. The anticipated weekly work-time is about 2 hours. Courses are accessed through your computer or mobile device, and course content is available online at all times. As weekly modules roll out, they are available for completion until the end of the course. The only due date is the end of the 12-week session.
GOCs are designed to be high-level and rigorous, so some participants may feel the need to spend additional time reviewing the course or supplemental materials. We do recommend keeping pace with the weekly modules to take full advantage of interaction with your peers and instructor.
6-week GOCs quality for 1.0 CEU or 10 PDHs per completed course; 12-week GOCs qualify for 2.0 CEUs or 20 PDHs per completed course.
ASCE courses meet all current requirements of all Canadian provinces with the exception of Quebec, which requires for the course to be used in preparation for a formal examination or assigned as study material by a university professor.
Europe has no overarching requirements for continuing professional development/licensure; each country has its own regulations for continuing education. Please check with your professional engineering institution.

For the 6-week GOC, understanding will be assessed at four points throughout the duration of the course via practical exercises. There will be one cumulative exam; a passing rate of 70% is required to earn CEUs. Three attempts are allowed for the final exam.
For the 12-week GOC, the assessment is broken into three knowledge checks, one each in weeks 4, 8, and 12. There will NOT be a cumulative exam; the three quizzes will be combined into a single score. Participants will have three attempts to achieve a passing grade of 70% or higher for each quiz.
